When to start sprouting for fall plants?
I would love to start sprouting for fall plants: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. But not sure when to start sprouting inside so that they will be ready to go outside when bigger? Also, what other plants are good for fall/winter here in the south?
Thanks!
Katie

I'm not sure where you are in the south but a lot of southerners on the forum here are planting their fall garden now. Someone from the south should be along here shortly to give you better information than me! Happy planting!

Unfrotunately I am from the mid atlantic area and as most of you are from the south all you do is look and Mel's book to determine when you first frost will be, if any, and work back from that.
I lived in Alabama for a while and your schedule of the planting season is quite different from what I was used to in Pa.
You have a lot of southern gardeners who could give you experienced advice..........

We have a Longview here in Washington, wanna join us in the PNW region? We could always use more members up here...
Okay joking aside, first go to this website and plug in your zipcode to find your average first fall frost date:
Then get your book and turn to page 259 where you will find a chart on the top of the page entitled Planting Schedule for Fall Crops. Use a calendar to work backwards from your frost date to determine which crops you should be starting from seed indoors or outdoors or when to transplant crops outdoors.
You can also contact your local university extension office for help, either with your frost date, or with specific fall crop questions. Find your extension office from this map:
Come back on here and ask us more questions if you're still confused. Lots of friendly folks around here like to help each other out. Good luck!

Since I don't know where in the South you are, I'm posting a planting guide put out by UNC.

and one from Texas A&M

Hope this will help you hit your area.
