Shou Sugi Ban Charred Wood
Has anyone here tried the Shou Sugi Ban charred wood method?
After watching some videos on this method, I want to give it a try. There's a Japanese temple made from charred wood and it has lasted a thousand years or so. But in a raised bed it can last about 7 years. My wood is due to be replaced after only two years and so I was looking into other methods assuming that treated wood is still considered toxic. I know some claim that it's safe now, but I'd rather be on the safer side. Plus, I really want to try this charred wood.
Thoughts?

If you try it, please share! I don't see why this method wouldn't work. Just don't burn the house down!

Sure will! I'll be doing this after I finish solarizing in August.sanderson wrote:If you try it, please share! I don't see why this method wouldn't work. Just don't burn the house down!
Here's a great article about this method:

Wow! That's thorough charring! I watched a video a year or so ago and it wasn't that intensive. The guy had a hose (?) and would mist the wood when it was to his satisfaction.

Dstack, have you considered using corrugated metal for your walls. You could use EMT for the wall support so no termite problems.

I sure have, and I love the look, but that's not recommended down here in S. Florida. The metal would heat up and bake the soil with the roots.
I'm excited to try this charred wood method.

Hmm, Dstack are you making a small shallow bed. Have you actually seen this happen? I going to do it here in Texas and we get hot too. That why I was going to put the wood seat on top to avoid the hot metal. I might have to look at adding a covering around the metal.

I've only read about it heating up too much in our climate. The wood seat and covering would solve the issue.has55 wrote:Hmm, Dstack are you making a small shallow bed. Re: Shou Sugi Ban Charred Wood
I thought about that. I would paint it white or at least a very light color that wouldn't absorb the heat.has55 wrote:I have not to figure out the covering yet. would simple painting work?
