HELLO,

THIS WILL BE MY FIRST TIME TRYING SFG. I LIVE IN GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV, ZONE 6A. I WILL BE PLANTING ASPARAGUS THIS YEAR AND NEED TO KNOW IF YOU LEAVE IT IN THE BOX AND WINTERIZE IT OR DO YOU HAVE TO DIG IT UP AND STORE IT. PLEASE EXPLAIN WHICH ONE TO DO AND THE DETAILS HOW TO DO IT. DO YOU TREAT ALL PERENNIALS IN SFG THE SAME IN THE WINTER?

THANKS ALOT, KIMBERLY

Hi and Welcome !! My brother lives in Central Michigan and I live in the Panhandle of Florida. We both have grown asparagus for several years. My asparagus is in big pots, and I don't shield them from the cold at all down here. My brother says it grows in the fields up in Michigan in old abandoned homesites and is the first green to sprout under the snow in the spring, untended and uncared for at all. It must be a very hardy plant. Follow the general planting instructions ( prepare your bed well and deeply, plant the crowns below ground level and fill in as the plants sprout and grow) for asparagus and wait at least 2 years before harvesting to give the roots time to become well established and you will be enjoying fresh asparagus each spring for years to come !! Asparagus is a perennial and needs to stay in place for 15-20 years so wherever you start it, but sure its the permanent home.

They have many feet of root growth and their crowns need to be buried 6" deep if Jersey Knights but even deeper (12") if the Washington varieites.
The holes are refilled with soil as the asparagus grows.

You shouldn't harvest any the first year and only a few the 2nd year. The 3rd year they will be in full production.

Good luck.

edited to add: We grow it here in Maine where it gets buried with feet of snow all winter so you don't need to winterize it except to mulch it.
