State university cooperative extension services are a great resource for finding out what plant varieties will grow well in your area, as well as what pests and diseases are common. The state universities put a lot of effort into researching this for farmers; we can also benefit from what they find out. The University of Florida Cooperative Extension Service has a chart available with recommended planting times and estimated harvest dates useful in planning planting and crop rotations, and I'm sure the other universities have come up with a similar resource. So, I looked up the websites to make it easier for you to find your state's extension website. I included NC since our region ends approximately at the NC/SC border and some on the southern NC coast might have years that fit into our regional conditions:

North Carolina: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/

South Carolina: http://www.clemson.edu/extension/

Georgia: http://extension.uga.edu/

Florida: http://solutionsforyourlife.ufl.edu/

Alabama: http://www.aces.edu/main/

Mississippi: http://msucares.com/

Louisiana: http://www.lsuagcenter.com/en/administration/about_us/extension/

Texas: http://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/

I'll second that. The LSU AgCenter was indispensable when I first started, and I still use it frequently. The cultivar list changes from year to year, so check back before each season. Just make sure you're reading the right thing, since most states have multiple hardiness zones.

Great points Unmutual. New research is always coming available, and they do try to keep the website up to date for farmers.
