Re: December: What to plant in Northern California and Central Valley areas
December, as well as January, is a relaxing month for CA gardeners. Winter crops are already in and some, like radishes, lettuce, chard, kale, sometimes broccoli, cauliflower and peas, are already being harvested. SoCal folks may still have some summer crops that are producing. This year, we are having some much needed rain so outdoor gardening is on pause.
Seed catalogs for 2020 are being shipped out for winter browsing and dreaming. Northern Cal folks have a couple of restful months before thinking about starting seeds indoors, while the Southern Cal folks may want to start earlier, depending on how winter shakes out.

Re: December: What to plant in Northern California and Central Valley areas
For those Californians who have an itch to sow something this month, there are still some plants that can be sowed now and harvested February-April in time to sow and plant summer crops.
Remember, a region has many zones, and each year, each month in each zone can be a little different from prior years. Therefore, use planting guides as guides, not concrete facts. Watch the weather forecasts. The same 8a-9b Zones can be found in different latitudes with different amounts of sunshine, which will also affect outdoor gardening.
I have Gardenate set at my Zone 9A, but you can select your Zone to see what can be started.
