A seasonal plan for cabbages for the uk
I think Plantoid will know the answer to this
Hi there. I need a plan that makes cabbage available for me and my family all year round. I don't know how to plan for succession. What to plant when or when to eat the cabbages
All I know is what cabbages I like - well thats a start isn't it
Ok here goes, the ones I like
April: Primo: Earliest of all: Pixie: Stonehead F1: Greyhound: Castello
Can I get a fall year out of these varieties

I think that you could do the primo, the earliest of them all, again in the fall because it would be able to tolerate the cooling down temperatures. That my thought but I have yet to grow cabbage...not enough room for it...let me know how it goes.

FB,
If you have purchased the seeds put the sow/ harvest dates up of each type as well as well ie sow from april till june ..harvest Aug to Nov sort of info
I have it in my head from my wicked distant past that you can have a cabbage a week ,a caui a week & carrots most of the year out your gardens if you get the sowing times right and use the right species .
Some of the types are :-
2013 Spring cabbages :- for next years harvest ,sow this July -Aug ( 6/7) . Plant out Sept- Oct 9-10) harvest 2014 Mar - May ( 3-5 )
See if you follow this shorthand S , P or H ... months in numbers
Durham early S-6-7 , P -9-10 , H - 2014 -3-6
Avon crest .......... ditto ................
Summer cabbages :- S-2-5 , P-4-6 , H-6-10
Greyhound
Hispi
Primo
Winnigstadt
winter cabbages:- sow a few now ??? S- 4-5 , P -6-7 , H 10 -12 ..... H 2014 -1-4 Celtic
Christmas Drumhead
Dutch white
Savoy cabbages :- sow a few now ??? S-4-5 , P-6-7 , H same as winter cabbages
Best of all
Ormskirk
Savoy King
Ormskirk Rearguard
Red cabbages pickled, boiled , blanched and tossed in a knob of butter or raw
S- 3-early 5 , P- 4-6 , H - 9-11
Red drum head
Stockley ginat
There are also chinese cabbages sowing direct is best in july to mid aug for sept to mid Nov harvest

Re: A seasonal plan for cabbages for the uk
score 9 out of 10 .......capitalisation has let you down . Suggest you buy a new computer with the correct version
Now don't let it all go to your head and start sowing zillions of seeds all at once or even ten at a time..
may I suggest you draw up a calender of a year from now in weekly slots and plan when you'll eat a cauli , cabbage or carrots .
I'm sure you can see where it's heading .... you'll rarely eat two cabbages or two caulies a week and I doubt not much more than a carrot a day per person .
So your plan should not show too many being available for harvesting in that week .
Use Mel's ( Book in my strap lines ) charts to work back to find your sowing date
and make a note in that week to sow so many cauli , cabbage or carrots .
Also do look on the seed packet to see if it says sow under glass. etc.
Carrots do not like cold wet like wot we have so bear with the generaL weather and if it's bad hold back on sowing or sow under a cloche till they start to show greenery .
On the other hand if it appears to be gorgeous continued weather then go and sow .

Re: A seasonal plan for cabbages for the uk
I used excel to make as spread sheet but not before I'd used it to make a chart on an A4 sheet of paper so I had a whole 35 days in big chunky squares , 12 sheets gave me my year , I taped them together in a long sheet like toilet paper and rolled it on an old empty kitchen foil tube .

Plantoid, sounds cool like a Roman scroll. Me is wondering if you still have the spreadsheet
