warning Plantoid AFKB till ??????
Just to let folks know . I've been dragged into the 21 st century and had to buy a new computer to replace my aging 8 yr old one .
I now have an all singing all dancing high spec windows 8 thingy to try and change over files to.
Not being a tecchie these days , it could take me a while to get it set up as I've already forgotten 99 % ofwhat the sales guy told me about it all
Goodness knows how I'll set up the wi-fi to modem connection as the dyslexia plays havoc when I have a string of numbers and characters to churn out accurately .
I'll catch up with you all in a few days time ........ hopefully

Well that wasn't as painful as I thought it would be .
Next time I'll stick pins in my eyes instead as it's less painful
I hate changing out computers , so many conflicts to resolve and still several need sorting . At least I have office 2013 student up and running so my post might be a little less dyslexic .

Now that you're an expert, I'll buy a new puter if you come set it up! I've been procrastinating for several years, because I know what a pain it is. Good for you

What I find irritating is that most new computers are starting to arrive without a disc drive so you have to buy all new aps and down load them.
If your ISP connection so much as sniffs it drops out and your back to square one .
I realised about ten years ago that we'd end up almost renting aps annually and that they would end up being stored on the computer makers mass storage systems & that we'd just log in to each app we rented when ever we wanted to use it. It looks like that time has finally arrived as things are being stored on so many clouds it's like a whole sky.
My next step tomorrow is to slowly try and bring in my two printers 1x colour laser , 1x laser ink jet , scanner , 500 gig external HD with pictures and doc's etc on it , Wi-Fi mouse, WI-FI keyboard , Bamboo tablet and several USB camera connections
I don't hold much hope for transferring DTpublishing , photo manipulation or my old web designer package or numerous other apps that are 7 yrs or so old .
More expense vicar, more expense .

Got myself a Chromebook a while back. LOVE IT! Super simple and easy to use. http://www.amazon.com/Acer-C710-2055-11-6-Inch-Chromebook-Iron/dp/B00BB9OXM0/ref=pd_cp_pc_1 Lightweight and quick. It makes an excellent second computer or laptop. Make sure and research them before buying. It's NOT WINDOWS!!!

Google cloud is rock solid and I'll take it any day over crashing, buggy hard drives. Everything I back up to the cloud is always there and accessible from all my devices, from just about anyplace I'm at.

SO, the only thing that I understand in this conversation is the need for more cowbell.......

Hey now my computer is only a year old and I still had to do some tinkering to get the video to play. And my kids think that I know everything...not when it comes to computers.

Re: warning Plantoid AFKB till ??????
Well Plantoid I'm glad you're back up and running so quickly. The "everything's an app" thing and cloud computing is making me crazy too. But so is not knowing how to fix the computer when something is wrong with it - always having to depend on hubby for that since he's got such a complicated setup.
I'm glad I have kids so they'll be able to keep me current for a while.
BTW, am I the only one who had to look up "AFKB" in the topic title? Plantoid, that's twice you've taught me new text speak. You keep me on my toes around here.

Re: warning Plantoid AFKB till ??????
Really, most computers are way more than most people need for day to day use. 9 times out of 10 most are surfing the Web. Checking emails or social networking. Maybe watching a YouTube video and so on. The chromebook is perfect for this. It's very simple. Very quick. Light and compact with excellent battery life. If you can use a browser, and sign into Gmail, you are good to go. You can even create documents and spreadsheets.

True dat, and it's why I'm postponing buying a new computer. Does the chromebook have the option to add a larger, external monitor?
Re: warning Plantoid AFKB till ??????
Yes, the model I have has an HDMI port, several USB, and a VGA port.

Re: warning Plantoid AFKB till ??????
My only issues with the cloud services is they're all using the crack-dealer business model.
Go on, have some. I'll give it to you free.
The future model is really simple. It's like renting an apartment. And in many cases, like with google, really read your T&C's, technically, you've granted them ownership of everything you've put up there.
You can see the future model in Microsoft's Office cloud offering. $10/month or $99/year. I'm guessing the prior upgrade was probably still running Office 2003. So that one time purchase of Office back in the day for $120 will now turn into $800 over 8 years.
