Turnips
Can someone please tell me when do I harvest turnips? How do I know when there ready?

Re: Turnips
I think the tops poke over the top edge of the ground like radishes do. Or you can slide a finger down the side under the soil and get an idea of how big they are. Then decide if it is the size you want or needs a bit more growing. But don't let them get too big. They get woody.

You harvest them when they are big enough!
- Seriously!:
LOL Big enough for you, that is. Turnips can be eaten at any time, just like carrots. I've been planting 9 per square, and pulling them when they are almost baseball size. Oops, I don't know if you're familiar with 'baseball size', so how about 'bigger than a tennis ball size'?!

FB ,
Harvest when Golf ball to tennis ball size in diameter . small for raw as sliced , batons or very coarse grated and served straight away grated fresh in salads or bigger for cubes in soups and stews .

Re: Turnips
Or when the leaves are overcome with leaf mulching bugs, including the white butterfly green worms. I'm just going to pull them and enjoy as juicy "radishes."
In another month, I will try them for the fall but I will have tulle cages in place, as well as for the brassicas.

Re: Turnips
I sowed turnips back in mid/late April. They are alive but really scraggly looking. The fabric cover kept out the cabbage butterflies, but created a sowbug heaven and they just keep chomping away.
I know how to deal with the pillbugs, but my question is:
Should I rearrange my plan and let these turnips keep trying? They've already gotten a month more than they should have needed.
Or is it unlikely they'll make much of themselves at this point? (i.e Should I pull them so that my fall plantings can go in as planned?)

Re: Turnips
Can't help. I've never been able to get turnips to bulb up so I used the greens. Bought a packet of seeds once that were just for the greens but decided that were too hairy.
