My heirloom Brandywine Tomatoes are just now reaching their peak.  I counted 159 on the vines yesterday, and harvested 6 or 7.  I will be going back out to pick the ripe ones today.  They are so, so good.

This is my best Brandywine so far.  It was picked on October 1st.

Ditto. Mind boggling! I bought a Brandywine at the Heirloom Exposition and saved the seeds for next year. Seems a lot of folks really like them so I must try them.

That's the most flawless brandywine I've ever seen. It should be a movie star!

Such a nice, neat garden, too.

All my brandywines are splitting! And I haven't watered them in weeks. Just too much rain. Wish mine looked anywhere near as healthy as yours!

CapeCoddess, thank you so much.

sanderson, thank you also.  I think you will be very pleased with the Brandywines.

Marc Iverson, such kind words.  My "moviestar brandywine" would thank you also, if it had not been thoroughly enjoyed on a fried bologna sandwich.

southern gardener, thank you, too.  I did see your post on your "Loaded Brandywines" and admired your wonderful tomatoes.  I never thought my little plants would come close to producing as many as yours.  I feel we were blessed with this great harvest.

Brandywine Tomatoes, 159 on Vines Today! Empty Question about planting

Post  Cajunsmoke14 10/17/2013, 12:35 pm

They are very pretty. I am new to SFG, and my question is: When did you plants them so they are still producing right now?

I have watched people plant old fashioned gardens, and their plants expire when it gets hot. I know they say that when 1 plant is finished plant another.

So did you like have spring planting, and when it was done planted more for the fall? I would love to have some fresh homegrown tomatoes right now.  Thanks for info.

Brandywine Tomatoes, 159 on Vines Today! Empty Planting Questions

Post  VJ72584 10/17/2013, 9:31 pm

I was in the feed and seed store in July and just asked what I could plant then. We had so much rain that the first round of tomatoes did not do so well. I planted them near the end of July and the plants have loads of tomatoes now. I don't know how long that will last since our first frost will come in about 3 weeks. Or so they say, who knows the weather is so crazy this year. I may have fresh tomatoes for Thanksgiving.  Right now I am growing lettuce, onions, bell peppers(tons), tomatoes and spinach.

Just look at the seed packet and see how long it take to mature and count back from your frost dates. I decided that since the seeds were 99 cents, if they only made three tomatoes, it was profit. What works one year may not the next. Its fun to experiment and see what happens. I do try to write down what was planted and when just for reference.

Brandywine Tomatoes, 159 on Vines Today! Empty Planting

Post  Cajunsmoke14 10/17/2013, 10:01 pm

Well, I can't wait until the spring to start some tomatoes. I'm really excited about this, and like working in the dirt. My predicted final frost is 3/17/14 and the first frost for this season is 11/5/13. I am going to do some fall items just to give it a go round, and get some experience.

Hi and welcome to the forum,
I got a late start with my SFG, and did not get started planting until June.  I think it was June 11th when I planted the heirloom Brandywine Tomatoes directly from seed into my garden. Their growth was slowed down in the heat of summer, but they are still going strong.  I fear that I may have to pick them all in the next few days as we are expecting 32 degrees next Tuesday.  I sure hate to see that, because they are still blooming.
Good luck with your garden.

Hey Unit

First love you garden the tomatoes look great!!!  But looking at you pictures I have a question.  You plant one tomato in each square but then have two main stems running up your trellis or just one?

cheers

floyd, thank you.  I planted extra seeds per square to insure a good plant.  The germination rate was great, so I had to thin out the extras, (which I put in another bed).  But some were so close together that I would have pulled up both plants, so I just left the twins.  It did result in a lot of extra vines, but it worked out ok.  Next year I will just plant one per square, and make sure that I  prune better.

Wow, what a gorgeous garden!!  I am cutesie with envy looking at those beautiful tomatoes!  I had a rough year with hail so I resorted to buying fresh tomatoes from my local greenhouse!  Fried Bologna sandwich sure sounds great right about now too!!  What are your plans with them if you have to pick them all?
