Two unrelated questions
Most all of us start our seeds indoors at various times to coincide with the last frost date and plant outside. Some you start 8 weeks before planting and some 6 weeks and so on. Well this year I will not be home until about 3.5 weeks before I would normally plant outside and just wondered if I needed to do anything different or if I should even worry about it. We normally plant about mother's day or to may 15 th. The only thing I can think of is that I might have a problem at the end of the season with some long growing plants. The other question is about corn. I have never grown it and know nothing about it but I wanted to try one box. Is it better to use a 4x4 or a 2x8 ?

Re: Two unrelated questions
Johnp, I'm curious what others will reply, but I don't think it will make much difference if you can't start on Mother's Day. Think of it as succession planting. Plus, the soil will be warmer so the transplants will probably catch up to where earlier started transplants would have been.
Corn likes neighbors. My first try was in a 1' x 3'. Next was a 2.5' x 2.5' and the ears were better pollinated. My guess is a 4' x 4' would be better than 2' x 8.'

Re: Two unrelated questions
Yes, a 4 x 4 is better than a 2 x 8 because corn is usually pollinated by wind but it can be hand pollinated if necessary.

Re: Two unrelated questions
Thanks, I knew something corn needed so a 4x4 it is. The reason I am growing some is all the farmers around here grow the same GMO bi-colored peaches and cream or something like that and I like the old fashion yellow sweet corn. So we'll see. Sanderson you are right. I forgot ( I do that a lot) that I did two experiments last season with cuc's and squash with careful transplants and seeds and both planted and transplanted came on just about at the same time.
