Late Planting: Am I on a fools errand?
Hi all,
I am just about to put all the plantings in my SFG's. This should have been done 3 months ago, but my knees went south for awhile and couldn't get the heavy work done. I plan to immediately put up shade cloth. I have covered the beds with permeable weed cloth to help retain moisture and I am going to mulch on top of it.
We are in the mid 90's now for the foreseeable future. Is there anything else I should do besides throwing in the towel and wait for the cool weather plantings?
Anybody ever planted this late before?
Gracias.

Sure. You can still plant things like basil and oregano and beans, at least in my zone. Some small summer squashes like patty pan, select leafy greens, and flowers of various sorts, etc. Still plenty of stuff.
Aside from the advice you might get here from people closer to your area, though, try contacting your local master gardener's association and your agricultural extension program. They can not only tell you which plants thrive in your area at different times, but often will have very specific suggestions as to which variety of those plants work best locally, and give you great tips on cultivation, when diseases and bugs come around and how to take care of them, etc. It's free, too, so you'll never get a better price.

I'd try tomatoes and peppers, maybe even eggplant, from the nursery, also. Frost is a long ways off here in California. Maybe cilantro by seed. Glad your knee is better.
Here's June planting from Gardenate.com.
Marrow Plant in garden. Harvest from October
Okra Plant in garden. Harvest from November.
Peas Plant in garden. Harvest from October.
Sweet corn Plant in garden. Harvest from October
Sweet Potato Plant in garden. Harvest from November.

Sig, I'm curious about the peas being listed with the other hot season crops.
Will they grow for you in the hottest part of summer?

You're asking me? I just report what Gardenate.com states. Maybe Audrey or others in the hot zones of CA can comment.

Maybe they mean the southern peas which love the heat.

Gardenate has southern peas listed as cowpeas. March planting.
Guess I will have to plant a few to see if they grow. I don't image they will produce much until late fall when it gets cooler. I hope I remember to provide an update.
Opps, I tossed them when organizing the seeds this spring.

Yes, southern peas = cowpeas. Lots of different varieties.

I grow the pinkeye purple hull peas (PEPH) - I am trying a new variety of PEPH peas this year called Top Pick. Here is a wide selection of southern peas.

And contrary to what one of the above articles says, PEPH peas attract aphids like crazy.

I advise transplanting after the sun sets and at twilight and watering heavily if you are concerned with high heat. At least, this gives your plants 10 hours or so before the sun beats down on them.
I recently transplanted in-the-ground zucchini in very hot weather, and they survived because I did it at night. The next day, they looked like they were almost dead, but two days later, they were happy and healthy looking again.

Thanks, that's my plan. We had hi clouds today and I'm hoping they hang around a couple of days. Big roll of shade cloth should be here by Monday. Going to be interesting.

Re: Late Planting: Am I on a fools errand?
Follow-up on planting peas now. While at HD, I drifted over to the seeds and picked up a pack of Ferry-Morse Sugar Snap while I restocked the Snow peas for this fall. "Sugar Snap . . . Vines tolerate heat." We will see.
