This October, it has been a delight driving through Nevada, western Utah and Arizona. The natural sights are amazing. The one, actually 2, things that have surprised me is the lack of fresh vegetables and the relatively scrawny row gardens. I've only gardened with ANSFG so it is the only thing to which I can compare. We plant 4 corn/sq ft. I saw 1 per foot, 2 across the row. Shocked Only one green house frame in the 1,500+ miles. Here in Sedona, AZ they get most of their veggies from Mexico with some from New Mexico. I swear some one could actually make a living growing fresh veggies with SFG for the upscale ($$) restaurants, especially with green houses to extend seasons.

October is a great month to visit these desert states.

Sedona has money too, right? Sounds like a plan.

$$ Exactly! Which is why one could actually make a profit. "Local grown" is not a phrase I have seen, except once, on this trip. Any members in this Prescott-Jerome-Sedona area?

And it would have to be raised beds due to the rocky "everything."

Woo hoo! Finally saw a garden - 4-5 (zooming by) relatively large green houses. I'm guessing it's in the 90's right now in Laughlin NV/Bullhead City. And smoggy. Guess it wants me acclimated for returning to Fresno this afternoon. Shocked

Glad you were able to do some traveling! I agree with you on the sedona thing! If only it wasn't so expensive to live up there, I'd be tempted to start something!!
There is more local grown food here in the phoenix area and Az is one of the top producers of tomatoes(wilcox area i think) and lettuce(yuma). Other than that there are nuts in the south eastern part of the state and also cotton. Not very much citrus left other than in the yards of the homes built on the old groves.
It really is a shame because we have great growing potential.. Also, this is the time of year everything is getting replanted after the brutal summer heat kills everything! My garden has been a barren wasteland from july-October... I didn't even try to keep anything alive this summer.

Hope you had a great trip!

Duhh,  I love Sedona, AZ area and this was only my second visit.  Did you scroll through to see some of the areas we visited/drove by?  Just awesome country, especially in October.  When I win the Lottery, I'm going to buy this house in Sedona:   Touring the SW deserts 02512
Shoot, the photo of the mansion was deleted. Sad But just look at all that room for gardening!

Now is their land naturally green like that, or is that irrigated?

I do exactly the same thing on a smaller scale, walking around my town  and seeing what people do not do with their land that has a lot more sunshine than mine.

Definitely irrigated, and fertilized, and mowed with manicure scissors!

And don't forget COLORED!  I've seen that over the last few years.  People actually have green coloring sprayed on their lawns...

I've seen sprayed lawns. The problem is, the grass is dead and eventually blows away. A neighbor redid their front yard and it looks nice. Maybe I will take a photo and post in California Drought.
