Lower South Feb 2017
Time to get the seeds started. When do you start direct sowing. I usually start peas and cool crops at the end of the month. Peppers and
in the house now to the end of the month.
I'm still in the Philippines until end of Feb so I'll probably direct sow some frost resistant veggies as soon as I get home.
I was reading a book just before writing this post and came across this poem by William Blake.. Made me think of all our battles with the dreaded SVB and the evil white moth on brassicas.
THE DYING ROSE
O Rose thou art sick
The invisible worm
That flies in the night
In the howling storm:
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.
My wish to all of you for this growing season is to stand strong for your Rose.

Re: Lower South Feb 2017
For me this month is going to be finalizing my list of what we will be growing and getting our seeds ordered. We are renting a house so we can't "mess" with the yard to much but did get the okay to put in one garden bed.
What is everyone growing this year?
I have also been asked to start seeds for some friends so they don't have to buy plants. They are getting the seeds for me. I am excited and a bit nervous about taken on this new responsibility. Wish me luck!!!!!

Re: Lower South Feb 2017
Good luck! Getting one bed is better than no bed. That was nice of the landlord.
Re: Lower South Feb 2017
Mschaef,
Is the landlord worried about tearing up his lawn. If so have you considered some tabletops. Lawn stays not only as is, but the water dripping through the MM turns it very green. When I took down my tabletops to move, the only space that needed repairing was where the legs were. Small areas that were easy to reseed.

Re: Lower South Feb 2017
Kay,
the only grass there is, is what little I have uncovered from blowing the leaves into a pile to start a compost pile. When we moved in the landlord said that we could do whatever we wanted with the yard. It hasn't been maintained at all. The leaves were about 3 inches thick and I uncovered some nice rock edging and bulbs that no one could even see. Here hoping to a great crop this season.

Mschaef, Sounds like you could have some fun in the yard as you uncover the landscape!

With the temps being in the 70's consistently now, what can I do in the garden now? I am thinking I can jump on planting seeds outdoors and if it gets cold I can cover the beds with plastic. What is everyone else doing?

Re: Lower South Feb 2017
Thanks Kay.
Looks like I need to get going on some cleanup, etc. so I can start some seeds.
Have you planted anything yet? I figure you are the closest to me so if I want to make it easy on myself, I'll just plant what you plant and when
