In my old style SFG beds I use long wooden stakes for indeterminate tomatoes and like SR I take off the suckers although I may leave one or two suckers to grow alongside the main stem just in case one of them breaks off partway through the season. In the ANSFG I use a trellis for indeterminates.

I went away for a week and my SFG exploded! I posted in the General Discussion with pics.

Now I'm learning when certain plants are ready for harvesting. Learning fast! :-)

To all -

As my season winds down (I go on holiday for two weeks beginning 18 August) I won't be able to do much more gardening. I wanted to say thanks for the feedback and info here. My 1st SFG in 11 years was a whopping success, and I learned much.

Successful crops:

  • Romaine & leaf lettuce grew like mad. Lots of good salads and burger toppings.
  • Three ears of corn. Okay for my first time.
  • Wax beans? Eh. Not so lucky.
  • Planted some marigolds for color. Planting only 1 seed per square next year! They went mad! LOL
  • Onions and garlic started great but in our heat their success remains to be determined.
  • Tomatoes...hooooly, cow! The advice about starting inside first? That didn't work, so I planted seeds. The cherry tomatoes, and the Juliet and Jet star plants I bought have more fruits on them than I can believe! Dozens on the plants. Tomatoes every day now. I'm looking for salsa recipes as I can only eat so many salads at once!
  • Oh, broccoli and peppers are coming but I'll probably be gone.

One question: what is too late to plant squash and pumpkins? I return from holiday on 2 September.

Thanks again all!
