Strawberry Seeds
Anyone have an abundance or some extra strawberry seeds they would be willing to send me? I’m very very early in my ANSFG career, so I don’t have much to offer in return yet. If I can help with anything I will.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Strawberry Seeds
I've never tried strawberries from seed, but I have been successful digging up wild strawberries and transplanting them into a bed. Any chance of finding any of those on your property?brianj555 wrote:Anyone have an abundance or some extra strawberry seeds they would be willing to send me? Anybody know if a grocery store strawberry could be be buried to produce a new plant? That might be an interesting search. The answer is NO, but here's a link that tells how to get seeds from a store-bought strawberry.

Re: Strawberry Seeds
CN,
I keep getting volunteer strawberry plants from composted store-bought strawberries. Does that answer your question?

Re: Strawberry Seeds
Strawberries are usually grown from plants (runners which are clones of the parent) rather than seeds, except for a few varieties like the Alpine strawberries. The modern big juicy strawberries are mostly hybrids of two (or more) different species, so they don't breed true from seed.

Re: Strawberry Seeds
Ok. I just read an article about starting them from seed and thought I would give it a shot. After searches by for them locally without any luck, I thought I would check here.BeetlesPerSqFt wrote:Strawberries are usually grown from plants (runners which are clones of the parent) rather than seeds, except for a few varieties like the Alpine strawberries. AWESOME! I wish I had that problem.donnainzone5 wrote:CN,

Re: Strawberry Seeds
Hmmmm... I’m guessing I could give that a shot. I was just thinking that once the fruit has been refrigerated, it wouldn’t germinate. ( someone told me that ). But then I thought .... wait ... I keep my seeds refrigerated to keep them fresh. So I guess that info was off!

Funny you should mention that. I was going to start a thread about volunteer strawberries until I saw this thread, and specifically your comment.
All these strawberry plants voluntarily came up in my garden beds because the seeds survived the compost. Last weekend I transplanted these from the beds to this hanging pot. I've had volunteer strawberries before the past couple of years, but nothing close to this many, and what a nice surprise!

Re: Strawberry Seeds
dstack,
Have you tasted any strawberries from those volunteers yet?
I plan to leave mine where they are for a while, and if I don't like their flavor, straight to the compost pile they go!

Re: Strawberry Seeds
Not from this new batch, but I did eat them from previous volunteers and they were some of the best tasting strawberries I've had. Although they were a bit small.donnainzone5 wrote:dstack,
