Re: New England October, 2018
Thanks for starting the thread, RJ.
I lost my mom mid Sept so haven't been on the forum very much. Lots to do to wrap things up...it just goes on and on.
Today I planted something for the first time since - a Sheffield plant given to me in honor of Mom.
It felt really good to dig in the dirt bare handed again.
Back in the SFG, a lot of the cherry toms have fallen and rotted due to neglect but I'm back to picking them and they are yummy! Same with the ground cherries. The cucumber plants are wilting but still producing, as are the kale, collards and chard. I have some pretty big beets to pull but haven't been moved to deal with them yet - I hope they aren't woody from waiting so long. The beet greens are gorgeous though.

Saddened to hear of your loss CC. It is very difficult when a parent leaves us.

On this date, 10 years ago, was my second YouTube video, of the downtown Springfield, Vermont sidewalk construction project!
This date, 10 years ago also had more normal daytime temps than what's forecasted today!

Yup, pretty dang cold these days. I need to take down the trellis's and transplant a few greens to the kitchen garden making winter harvest easy peasy.. The sun just came out after 2 days of torrential wind and rains, so no time like the present.

I only got 2 beets this year..not sure why? I do like them, especially pickled! We have no color here which is super strange. Leaves still on the trees.

Re: New England October, 2018
What varieties of beets do you grow, CC? I have chiogga and Detroit red. I like Chiogga better, but the red holds better if pickling. I would like to have a nice sweet fresh eating/cooking variety to try! Any suggestions?

SR, I'm pulling out my plot plan now...lessee...
Red Baron, Cylindra and Chiogga. I usually grow only Detroit reds for canning and eating but none came up this year. Old seed me thinks.
TD, I actually didn't have a bountiful root year this year either, unlike last year. Got zero carrots and about 1/4 of the beets i planted.
I think my heart just wasn't into it this year what with Mom being off her game and all. Some how worry and gardening didn't seem to mix well.
...but there's always next year!
and I'm still eating greens.

Yeah, I had zero germination on beets, and not good on radishes either, but the fall radishes got eaten by the green manoleechies. Grrr! My fault. Lack of planning for pests.CapeCoddess wrote:SR, I'm pulling out my plot plan now...lessee...

I just want a non-dirt tasting sweet beet!!!!
