Unidentified Bug in the Garden
I was digging in my soil this afternoon and found a lot of the bugs pictured below. Does anyone know what it is?
Edit: It appears that I cannot post photos since I am a new member. I guess I can in a week so will be back then.

Re: Unidentified Bug in the Garden
Looks like the white grubs from June Bugs, Chafers and Japanese Beetles that we have here in Canada. They destroy lawns and skunks love to dig them up.
The linked article says, "Grubs feed on the roots of many plants, but like the fibrous roots of lawn grass best. As the roots are destroyed, turf will wilt and turn brown. Grubs also feed on potatoes and carrots in the garden. They cut the main stems or roots of plants below the soil surface, and tunnel into tubers and freshly rooted plants."

Re: Unidentified Bug in the Garden
Thank you for your response. I had a lot of I'itoi onions planted in the bed with the bugs. The onions didn't grow (or died) over the course of three months. When I pulled the onions the roots looked fine, about 4" long even though the tops didn't look good. I occasionally fertilized with fish emulsion and a general purpose fertilizer so don't know whey they didn't do well.trolleydriver wrote:Looks like the white grubs from June Bugs, Chafers and Japanese Beetles that we have here in Canada. Re: Unidentified Bug in the Garden
Baduk, I think what you have in your hand is a ground beetle grub, a predator of the onion maggot. In other words you maybe holding the beneficial that ate the pest who destroyed your onions. If your county ag office is close by, you may want to take it in for a positive identification.

Re: Unidentified Bug in the Garden
Agree with Dan on the ID. I had zero luck growing onions from seed and honestly I have a pretty green thumb. Got nothing, I mean one out of 16 made it? I use onion sets now, and much much more productive! Like potatoes....sets!
