That's a Tomato hornedworm, a catipillar of the Hawk moth. Usually they come in multiples, so keep your eyes peeled for new droppings.

If you see one of the Tomato Hornworms with these white wasp eggs on its back, don't disturb it - the Hornworm is already dead since the larva of the Braconid wasp which hatch out of those eggs are consuming the caterpillar. Each of those eggs will eventually turn into another wasp which will pursue and kill other Tomato Hornworms.

Yeah, they are super destructive...I have seen a few. Glad you found it! I have never had them on my peppers....but yay!

When I was a kid, my grandfather would give us a penny apiece bounty for picking these out of his tomato patch. Us boys in the neighborhood were real creative in the disposition of these worms. Tap dancing on these giant pests was the usual mode of eliminating these , but a creative bike rider soon discovered that they could also be used as targets when "spinning doughnuts" in the street. Oh well, beats pulling the wings off flies, I guess.
