planning for August
We are restarting our 3x6 bed and hoping to be ready for planting in mid July or early August. I have not SFG for years and will have to review the planting calendars. We are hoping for herbs, asian and salad greens, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers. My kids will be the gardeners and I am just the helper.
If you have any suggestions I'll appreciate it.

Re: planning for August
Gem, your climate is similar to mine, just slightly warmer. It looks like you are Zone 9B. ?? Take a look at this gardening guide. www.gardenate.com
I plant the cabbage family, lettuces, Swiss chard, kale, carrots and radishes, and pea plants for winter (plant on Oct 1). I cover all except the peas under a secure bridal tulle cover to keep the white butterfly off. I plant summer plants in early April (weather cooperating). Take a look at gardenate.com and use that as a loose guide. July is your monsoon, correct? Don't forget to use trellises (vertical growing) for melons, cucumbers and even tomatoes to free up space for the other squares.

Re: planning for August
Thank you for the tips! Oct is a good goal. We can focus on rebuilding the bed for now, too hot anyway. I bought a used curtain that looks like tullle, I will try your suggestion. Hubby built a cage covered in 1/4 wire mesh that kept most critters out but the small ones still get in.

Re: planning for August
Hi, GreenGem! I also use an app called Skippy’s Vegetables, it’s free and really pretty accurate once you get your dates inputted and veggies chosen. You can also sign up on Mother Earth News for a free email newsletter on Your Personalized Planting Guide. Good luck, and keep us posted!
