I would call the nearest horse farm/riding stable/race track to see if they compost their manure or have old piles sitting around. If you are looking for free worms that would be the place to start. Then learn to identify Eisenia fetida from Lumbricus rubellus both will be found in manure piles, there maybe be other species in California. Here in Ct. those are the only two you will find, in any kind of quantity. Otherwise, worms cost $25-$35 a pound. Sounds like a lot but not to the guy raising them and the labor involved.

thanks and anyone grown florence fennel
i seems that florence fennel or bulb fennel is not a good companion plant for anything. has anyone planted and had a problem with other plants near by. do not want to create a problem.

Tim, from my paper on companion planting:
Fennel – Not a companion for any garden food plant, fennel will actually inhibit growth in bush beans, kohlrabi, tomatoes, and others. Plant it, but keep it out of the veggie garden. Fennel attracts hoverflies, ladybird beetles, parasitic wasps, and tachinid flies, so it's a kind of beneficial insect magnet. It's also an important food plant for swallowtail butterfly caterpillars.
