JUST ABOUT READY TO START SFG IN MY VEG TRUG!
Hi All, I am new here and am just about to start SFG in my Veg Trug. I live in SO CAL in an apartment with a patio that gets lots of sun. I bought a Veg Trug and am in the process of filling it. I was only able to find FOUR different composts: Worm Castings, Chicken Manure, Mushroom Compost and something called Gardener's Gold, along with the vermiculite and Peat Moss. I measured out that I can have 12 squares (although not all will be 12 inches deep). I have the following seeds: Golden Beets, Carrots, Kale, Spinach, Celery and 2 types of flowers. Any input would be great.....think I have everything I need? I am so excited. Working at home alone during the COVID crisis and all the extra time has gotten me excited about this. Last year I also started juicing, so the celery, beets, carrots, spinach and kale will go into my juice.

Re: JUST ABOUT READY TO START SFG IN MY VEG TRUG!
TR, Welcome to the Forum from Fresno, Central CA. First, congratulations on finding at least 4 types of compost. With last year's panic to start gardening, supplies flew off the shelves. It seems that compost production has not caught up for this year's gardening in some areas.
The veggies you want to grow are considered cool weather crops and would do better if you started them in the fall. Being in SoCal, they will do much better than starting them now. This is the time to look at hot weather crops such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, yellow squash, cucumbers, zucchini, etc. Patio-style, compact tomato plants should do great. I love juicing celery, tomatoes, bell peppers and cucumbers. Think V-8 juice.
