Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
We have received proposals/quotes to add a 20 x40 ft bird netting to the top of our fulling enclosed raised garden bed. The quote includes heavy duty wire cable and hardware to attach to the top rails and act as supports for the netting. The purpose is to keep the birds and any animals that want to climb up the sides of our wire mesh out of the garden.
Has anyone put bird netting on as a roof? Are there any issues with snow or have any of you taken down the netting in the winter.
I wanted to send a photo of the existing garden but so far have not figured out how to attach photos.

Re: Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
Please don't use black bird netting. Birds can get caught in it. Use something that is a little thicker and is colored.

Hi Sanderson,
I have a quote from Nixalite for their K-Net HT Bird Netting.
* 75 lb strand, knotted breaking strength
* 12 Ply high density Polyethylene HDPE
* Seamless net with steam-set knots
* 3/4" mesh
* Comes in Black or Stone (tan) colors
Why is the color black an issue ?
Thanks for your comments, they are appreciated,
Alan

Because the birds can't see it before they fly into it, and they then get tangled in it.

Contact Nixalite to see if their K-Net HT Bird Netting is thick enough to be visible to birds. It looks thicker than bird netting sold at gardening nursery.
Re: Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
Ordinary bird netting tangles too easily to work with (in my experience, anyway). Here's what I recommend:
Knitted Bird Netting | American Nettings and Fabric
It's a green color, doesn't tangle, is easy to work with, durable, and safer for birds in general.

Hi donnainzone5,
We are putting this bird netting on top of our 20 x40 ft fully enclosed garden... not to cover up the individual beds. Is this what you are referring to?

Re: Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
I use a netting known as "gamebird netting" to protect my garden. This netting is made for people who raise gamebirds as a way to keep their birds from escaping. Pretty durable stuff. I support it on pvc hoops that span across my garden. I have found that snow will collect on the netting, and the weight will crush my hoops, so I remove the netting in the winter.

Re: Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
Years ago I used what was called utility fabric from Joanns Fabric. A little pricey however I waited for sales and got 50 % off, then sometimes could slip a coupon through. The stuff was amazing, kept clean would not tear or shred. I used it for 3 years removing it for winter, kept big bugs out, filtered suns rays, allowed rain to penetrate, it was excellent.

Jimmy!! Looking good!
Donna, Thanks for listing the product. I'm adding blueberries and fruit trees to my garden, and I was hoping to be able to eat the fruits without sharing with the birds and Scat the Squirrel.

Re: Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
I believe we got our netting from american netting too. I worked, but I found it cumbersome getting in and out. Our solution was to pick the fruit just before it was fully blushed. We found on the government website this was ok because the fruit still fully ripen and didn't crack and the birds didn't get out fruit. That wa sour experience with the netting. we used snap clamps for anchoring the netting down.

we found when we put the shade cloth up with a 4 ft extension the birds were a afraid to fly under it.

Re: Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
The black bird netting commonly found at HD and Lowes is horrible to work with!! If you and Has have the same netting, then I should be happy with it. I'm guessing the 100 foot roll will work for the 10' x 8' area.donnainzone5 wrote:Ordinary bird netting tangles too easily to work with (in my experience, anyway). Here's what I recommend:

I did buy the green netting but did not need it with the first year fruit trees/bushes. I have the winter bird feeders up and I hope none of them get caught in netting this summer.

Re: Bird Netting on Top of Enclosed Garden
So far, no birds have been harmed by my netting.
