Stone Wall as Melon Support

Stone Wall as Melon Support
I have never grown melons before. I have a stone wall that I would like to use for support instead of building a trellis. There would be about 4 feet of vertical growth and then the vines would have to be trained to go horizontally where they would have a good 8-10 feet. Is horizontal growth as good as vertical? Will they grip the wall with out net or string?
Excited to have some watermelon WITH seeds later on this summer.

Melons on wall
I had a bunch of 2 LB pumpkins that went crazy up a wall with chicken wire on it, and they did fine. I also planted one on Mel’s Trellis (galvanized conduit with woven mesh) and it grew fine there. I ended up tying hammocks under these pumpkins only because we got some windy, rainy weather right before harvest season and I didn’t want to lose them after caring for them all summer! The ones on the wall needed nothing, I think because they weren’t as exposed to the wind/rain.

Re: Stone Wall as Melon Support
Watermelons need something to vine around, to grab onto. You could lean a trellis against the wall or add the trellis design in the book.
