What do you guys use for SFG borders here in Hawaii? It seems like all 1x6 lumber is treated with hibor here. I guess I could pony up for redwood or other expensive cuts. Do you use wood, plastic, bricks or other?

The wood at Lowes is not treated. I've asked several times to make sure as well as different clerks. It says it's kiln dried but not treated.

I'm in the process of adding 2x2's to the tops of my boxes because the 2x6 I used is not deep enough to make 6" of soil. Also to help with the HOT summer we're having. Next time I'll buy 8" wood.

Thanks for the info on Lowes.

I was wondering about the depth issue too. 6" doesn't sound much to begin with. And the actual width of 2x6 is 5.5". Since you probably don't want to fill up to the rim, you might be better off starting with a 2x8.

Exactly! If you haven't built your boxes yet, the 2x8 or 1x8 may be a better choice.

I need to add some height to my boxes to make the 6" depth and it's a hassle to take the grids and plants out. The additional depth might help me with the hot weather we have in Ewa.

Borders for SFG in Hawaii, untreated wood? Empty Lowe's & Home Depot wood IS treated in Maui

Post  OceanGardener 6/4/2011, 4:55 pm

I couldn't find untreated wood in anything wider than a 2x4. I had to stack one on top of the other. I'm probably going to need to add a 3rd level for more height.

welcome and aloha.

It's great to see somebody from Hawaii on the forum. It will be interesting to hear about your year round gardening experiences.

Borders for SFG in Hawaii, untreated wood? 654548 OceanGardener. Nice to have you join us.

Two stacked two by fours will give you 7 inches of depth, which in most areas would be sufficient depth. Just glad you were able to find untreated wood for your boxes.

Please keep us updated on your progress, we reallly want to see how thing grow for you.

Again, Welcome!
