Hello again from southeast New Mexico

wow this new forum is fancy! OK just a question. I'm not sure which one of the regional forums I fit into. I'm in the southeast corner of New MExico in Hobbs. I get all my gardening radio from Neil Sperry's show out of Dallas on the Texas Gardening area and I just do what the folks east of me in Seminole and Denver City Texas do as our climate is the same. We're all on the Mescalero caprock, just west of the dryline, but we still get some rain and snow. Never more than 20 inches though for the year. I'm on the edge of zones 7a and 7b. It's kind of an odd mix of situations.
The radio stations lump southeast new mexico and the west Texas permian basin together. Maybe we could have a regional group for that? I dunno just a thought.

I have the same problem in my region. It's half wet and half dry. I just look for folks in the wet area where I live. It would be difficult to break down climate zones for everybody.

Even the numbered zones are lacking. You're in zone 7, so am I on the west coast, so is Ward on the east coast. We all have different weather.

Micro climates. Keeps me awake and inventive. It is nice being unique, until you need information or a group to associate with.

I raise my peat pot in a toast....here’s to figuring out who we are as individuals, where we fit as family and not going bug-nuts trying to figure it all out.

Thank you folks for the warm welcome. I'm hoping the weather breaks Monday while I'm off. I've got a raised be that I had started along a wall that I plan to dismantle and scavenge the wood for some 2x8 boxes. I've already got some 3 foot wide weedbarrier fabric so I can use it to line the boxes. It's baby steps right now, but I'll keep plugging along and turn my bare back garden into a south plains oasis bit by bit.

If that's what you're aiming for, seems to me that should include a water feature. Is that on your list of things to do?

Hi Sir, I was just "talking" with Boffer about the Zone nonsense. You might like to check out this site: http://www.garden.org/zipzone/. The page that appears gives a good description as to why and why not that zone thing doesn't work for you westerners.

It won't help with your garden planning but at least it's an explanation.

Very true about the map being....not so great. We're at 3600 feet here in Hobbs and we have a low humidity. the daily temp swings can be up to 50 degrees this time of year. It definitely helps to keep all the garden beds mulched with heavy bark chips. that keeps the moisture in a the wind can't blow the mulch away.
I grew up in Memphis Tennessee so I'm having to relearn all my gardening skills out here. It's a challenge, but it's fun! As Larry would Say....Git R Done!
