Sourcing Peat Moss
Hi all,
I'm just in the process of researching sources for my first SFG, and have got a bit stuck on the peat moss.
I recall reading in the old forum, that someone in NZ was using sphagnum moss instead, but now I'm not sure if this was the green plant type material, or the brown composted stuff (as in the Yates Hauraki Gold).
Also, how(or where) have people found the best way to source this, as I would guess the volume required would make it a bit prohibitive to buy it at the local garden centre!
Any and all help for this newby, greatly appreciated

Re: Sourcing Peat Moss
Hi, Wenznz -- I'm pretty sure it's the brown composted stuff.
With the renewability and ecological concerns about true peat, I found nothing here in France *other* than composted sphagnum (which is renewable).
I had great success with my garden last year, too. I can't remember exactly what I paid -- but a great huge bag of it wasn't very expensive.
Check with your garden centres and home stores...they should have it.

Sourcing Moss
Hi there,
Just wondering which island you are in....west coast of south island is where most sphagnum is collected and dried. if you visit there and and ask around I am sure someone can point you in the right direction and you will be able to buy bulk dried amounts directly from a farmer. You can sometimes see the drying racks out in paddocks as you drive past.
regards
