Hello everyone,

I posted to the main welcome page and thought I would post to this one also as I live in Oklahoma.

I am new to SFGing. I helped take care of 2 large gardens as a kid growing up on a dairy farm. I will be starting to build my bed tomorrow (I hope) and getting the stuff together to fill it. I am going to start with 1 bed and maybe try to have a second ready to plant some fall stuff also.

I am in a wheelchair so things will be a little different for me. I will be putting my beds on the ground. They will be deep beds with sand fill in the bottom.

Welcome aboard, Slim!! I will take the apology on for the team here for not getting to you sooner. You will find a nice bunch of people here, and oh so willing to help. No question should go unasked, especially since you are an SFG rookie. And, we love pictures, too. So, poke around, get comfortable here, and get involved. I think you'll find it's a great community!

If I may ask a couple of questions?

- You mentioned helping out around a dairy farm....can you briefly summarize the extent of your experience? SFG and traditional gardening can be different in some areas; I am trying to anticipate what some of your questions would be, but can't without knowing where you are coming from.

- Have you read Mel's new book? The one bannered at the top of the pages here? It's a great resource, and I would recommend it to anyone converting over to SFG. That way you see the fundamentals of his approach first hand instead of being constantly reminded of them. He also explains them better than most of us can.

- Have you ever thought of putting your garden up on stands or posts to get it up to where you can reach it? In Mel's book, we call it a TT (Table Top) SFG. For people that can't bend down, for whatever reason, it can really make gardening even more enjoyable. You could never dream of that with a row garden.....it's perhaps SFG's biggest advantage and practical application of the space conservation.

- And, where in OK? There is a nice contingent here from OKC to Tulsa. I, myself, used to live close to Tulsa....just across the Kansas border. I would love to be able to picture where you are tuning in from...lol.

My experience with conventional gardening is 2 large gardens 1 at our
house and 1 at my grandparents both about a half acre. I also grew a
half acre of Okra one year as an FFA project (boy was that a lot of
work). I had several grocery stores and a summer camp that took all I grew.

No I haven't read the book yet, but will as soon as it arrives.

I did look at some of the information on here about TT SFG, but I think I
am going to stay with the ground based, as I think it will look much
neater and my wife is a stickler for keeping the place looking nice. I
can still do a lot from the wheelchair, the top of the beds will be
about 12" high which will make them accessable for me, will fill the
bottom with sand.

I live about 5 miles from Locust Grove which is about half way between
Tulsa and the Arkansas border. We have 5 acres with about 2 acres in
yard.

You sound well researched. You are probably a great addition to the forum. Welcome again!

My parents and their friends had boats on Grand Lake for years, of which you've obviously heard. They got lucky and sold their stuff over the past two years. Perfect timing from this winter's blizzards that crushed all those docks and buried some boats. That was such a shame.

Welcome to the group Slim! I'm brand new to SFG as well and have gotten a lot of help from all the nice people here. Any time you have a question just pop on here and someone will have some insight for you. You have many more years of standard gardening experience than I do so you will likely have some great insights yourself.
