Asparagus

Can we do asparagus in the SFG or should I have a separate area for it?

Asparagus is a perennial. They can get quite wide with their ferny growth habit.
You need a place where they can stay and grow for 15-20 years.
You won't even be harvesting anything the first yr and very little the 2nd year. The 3rd year you can harvest the asparagus for 4-6 weeks.
I'd put it in a separate area.
In fact, I'm going to have asparagus this year. I chose a hilled up 'raised bed' without lumber for my future asparagus bed. Right now its under plastic to warm it up a bit.

In this picture, my SFG is on the right, my future asparagus bed is in the foreground covered in plastic. To the far left is a narrower hilled bed with 6 alpine strawberries (they are perennials) at the far end where I'll be planting more seeds this year but also I'll be placing my coldframe on this hilled bed. That's still snow in between the rows.

In the past I've used these hilled beds for different crops different years. Potatoes, corn, summer squashes, cantaloupe, and zucchini. They sure came in handy for things that really do better with more than a foot square. Now one will be my permanent asparagus patch with space for some zucchini at the end.
