Hello all,

I am familiar enough with companion planting, but I do have a couple of questions to throw out. I realize that not planting something "with" something means do not plant in the same box; but, how close is too close? What about in separate boxes, but boxes next to each other?

Do any of you see any contraindications to planting a box this year with corn, that was planted with all pepper plants last year? I know to not do this with tomatoes, but I wondered about peppers. Google did not come up with anything.

How about any contraindications, other than peas, beans, and potatoes, to a succession planting after a harvest of garlic, potato onions, and shallots? Again, Google did not come up with anything.

Any thoughts?

Here's a few prior companion planting threads. You can probably find more using the search feature in the upper left corner on the index page, right above the latest topics list. Very Happy

I like Eliot Coleman's ideas on companion or succession planting.
Corn should be rotated with a nitrogen-fixing crop like peas or beans. That means to grow it the following year.
Since peppers, potatoes and eggplant are in the tomato family, I would not use any of them. Why not try bush beans?

As for companion planting, to me that means they can be grown happily side-by-side and in some cases, like the small and fast crops like radishes, lettuces, spinach or greens, a few can be tucked into the same square but not right up against the main plant. Those others will be harvested and long gone before the main plant needs all the energy from its one square foot space. Otherwise, I give the companion plant its own square beside its companion.
