Re: Sixth Year SFG in Canada
Sounds good, TD! I started my onion seeds this past Sunday, so I'm ready to go.

I haven’t started anything yet...but did get the seeds out and started to “stage them” for starting. I too think of you daily TD, I can see how you are basically obsessed with health related issues.
Aerogardens would be the easy button to dip your toe back into the pond! Herbs might be nice, too.

Frustrated ... I went to two stores today to buy onion seeds. Seemed like there were seed packets for every flower and vegetable on the planet. But no onion seeds except for green bunching onions. I guess I must be the only person here in the great white North who starts onions from seeds indoors.

Re: Sixth Year SFG in Canada
Took a positive step toward having a SFG this summer. I am doing a seed viability test for last year's Leek, Bunching Onion and Walla Walla Onion seeds. I'll give them a few days on wet paper towels sealed in a plastic bag. If ok then I'll start some indoors for transplanting in the Spring.

Re: Sixth Year SFG in Canada
I'm also planting different varieties of onions. So far, I've only been successful with potato onions. I've failed at all others -- including chives.trolleydriver wrote:Took a positive step toward having a SFG this summer. Pretty good results, TD! I only had two varieties this year, and now I have one planted.
Bridger from 2019 -- 94% germination
Yellow of Parma from 2018 - 0.0% germination

Not much more than a SF of garden space there.
It's a start to the season for those of us in short season areas.

Re: Sixth Year SFG in Canada
Took some action today to dig out things I need to start seeds indoors. To do that Mrs TD and I had to go through the snow to the mini-greenhouse. Thankfully the snow was hard enough that we did not sink in.
This is where it will happen in the basement. I have to set up the grow lights above the shelves at the back. Also lots a washing/cleaning of the pots that I will use. I have way more than what I really need.

Poop.
That means most of my seeds from pre-DH accident in 2017 are probably going to be slow to germinate if at all. I keep them in the fridge, though. Where have yours been kept, TD?
Oh, and great job at getting outside and in your garden. It's wonderful to see you smiling!

I just keep my seeds in their original packets and put the packets of similar crops (e.g., all tomatoes) in clear plastic sandwich bags which are then stored in the basement (cool and dark).

Re: Sixth Year SFG in Canada
I had better get cracking to see what the germination is of all the seeds I have.
Re: Sixth Year SFG in Canada
Leeks and especially onion seeds do not keep long neither do lettuce seeds. Peas and beans last a long time. All depends on the type of vegetable.
